Digital Minimalism in a Maximalist World

Less became more, then more became viral, and now we’re drowning in apps designed to simplify. Where’s the off switch?

Digital minimalism promised liberation from the chaos of modern technology. Delete the apps that don’t serve you. Unsubscribe from the newsletters you don’t read. Declutter your digital life the same way you’d declutter your closet. Simple, right?

Except minimalism itself has become maximalist. There are apps to help you use fewer apps. Courses on how to simplify. Influencers whose entire content strategy revolves around having less content. We’ve turned the absence of stuff into stuff, the rejection of consumption into something to consume.

The minimalist aesthetic—the white walls, the empty desks, the carefully curated “capsule wardrobes”—costs money. It requires space. It demands time and energy to maintain. It’s a luxury good masquerading as a lifestyle philosophy. And the digital version is no different.

We download focus apps that block other apps. We pay for services that limit our screen time. We buy devices specifically designed to do less. We’ve created an entire industry around selling us solutions to problems that the industry itself created. And we call this progress.

The real issue isn’t too many apps or too much stuff or too much content. It’s that we’ve lost the ability to simply choose. We need an app to tell us we’re using too many apps. We need a system to manage our systems. We need someone else to tell us what we actually want.

True minimalism isn’t about counting how many things you own or how many apps are on your phone. It’s about being able to sit with yourself without needing to optimize the experience. It’s about the confidence to decide what matters without consulting a framework or following a method or documenting the journey for content.

The off switch isn’t another app. It’s not another system. It’s not something you buy. It’s just… off. But that’s the hardest thing to sell.
